Welcome to CUPE Local 4797
We are proud to represent support workers in the Northwest School Division #203 — the people who keep our schools safe, clean, welcoming, and running day to day.
Join us in building a stronger, fairer workplace — your voice, your union.
Who We Are
CUPE Local 4797 is the designated local union representing support staff in the Northwest School Division. (Local 4797 appears in the list of CUPE Saskatchewan locals under “Northwest School Division.”)
The Local has grown over time — for example, in 2020 a successful organizing drive added 43 new members in various classifications (such as wellness coordinators, support staff at individual schools) to the bargaining unit.
Our Members & Classifications
CUPE 4797’s membership is diverse and reflects the many roles essential in the school division. Among the classifications represented are:
-
- Caretakers & Custodial Staff
- Educational Assistants
- Library Technicians
- Administrative Assistants
- Bus Drivers
- Wellness Coordinators
- Family Advocate
These roles are critical to student success, campus safety, and smooth operations — though often behind the scenes, they are foundational.
At one point, the Local represented approximately 180 members across such roles.
What We Do for Members
Solidarity. Representation. Voice.
By being part of CUPE 4797, you gain:
- Collective bargaining: We negotiate with the employer (School Division) for fair wages, benefits, working conditions, leaves, seniority, and more. For example, in prior collective agreements, wage increases, improved vacation / leave language, and grievance procedures have been secured. SaskToday+2Canadian Union of Public Employees+2
- Grievance support & enforcement of your rights: If there’s a contract violation, you have representation.
- Job security measures: Layoff / recall language, seniority protections, etc.
- Organizing & expansion: We seek to bring unrepresented support workers into the union, so that more voices are heard and more protections apply (as happened in 2020). CUPE Saskatchewan
- Community & solidarity: Local 4797 participates in community events (for example, raising funds at the St. Walburg Blueberry Festival). Canadian Union of Public Employees
- Member education & engagement: We provide updates, workshops, meetings, newsletters — so members understand their rights, the collective agreement, and opportunities to engage.
- Political advocacy: We can take part in provincial & local education policy discussions and voice your concerns about funding, safety, resources, and support for students and workers.
Why Join / Be Active
- Strength in numbers: A union is only as strong as its membership — when more people are active, we can bargain more effectively.
- Your voice matters: As a member, you can vote on contract ratifications, elect local officers, propose motions, run for steward / executive — help steer our future.
- Protection when you need it: Having union representation gives you a safety net — you don’t have to face challenges alone.
- Build connections: Meet colleagues from across the division, share experiences, support each other.
- Grow our union: By bringing more workers in, we extend protections, fairness, and justice to more people.
